WEST COLUMBIA, SC.—As the Lagniappe Home Project nears completion, Creative Tile and Precision Tile Company, both of West Columbia, pitched in during October to furnish and install flooring for the Denny Family.
Brian Denny was a healthy and active 34-year-old, when an accident in 2010 at his job with Stock Building Supply confined him to a wheelchair. The young family, including Denny’s wife Jessica and their children, Cooper, 6, and Kendall, 8, weren’t sure how to deal with the challenges they now face, when the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia (HBAGC) volunteered to help.
The Denny’s new family home, dubbed the Lagniappe Project, which means “something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure” (Webster’s), has been almost fully donated, including materials, time, and talent, by members of the HBAGC. The home, on which construction began in November 2010 and is being led by McGuinn Construction Management, will be completely wheelchair accessible upon completion.
Most recently, the Dennys visited Creative Tile’s West Columbia store to choose materials for their bathrooms, laundry room, and kitchen. Creative Tile, as well as their vendors, DAL Tile, Megatrade, and Custom Building Products, donated tile and setting materials, whereas Precision Tile Company, of West Columbia, a NTCA member and CTEF Certified installer, donated their time and installation expertise.
Becky Heron, manager of Creative Tile, is appreciative of the donations she received from vendors to help with the Lagniappe Project.
“As a company, we were happy to donate tiles for this project, but to have some of our vendors also step up and donate also, when they are not a part of the Midlands’ Community, was just awesome,” said Becky.
The Denny’s new home now boasts a beautiful black and white checkerboard laundry room floor, a fully tiled, curb-less master bath shower, master bath floor / walls and an art deco tile backsplash in the kitchen. The home is currently being painted, and contractors hope to have things completed in time for Christmas.
“We could not have spent our time better than helping the Dennys,” said Scott Heron, owner of Precision Tile Company. “This is a project that, although I wish wasn’t needed [for Brian’s injuries], I am glad to be able to give back to the community that has helped us and other Home Builders Association members.”
“I can’t thank our members enough [for helping the Denny family and the Midlands] to build a better community,” said Earl McLeod, Executive Director of the HBAGC.

A new use for old monitors
Whether it’s a Television Set or a Computer Monitor, if it has a Cathode Ray Tube in it, it can be recycled into tile!

This glass cylinder may not look like much, but it delivered all television programing until only a few years ago. Being that a Cathode Ray Tube is made of glass, it is easily recyclable. Check out what the folks at Ceramiche Supergres are doing with old tubes:

What looks like resin in the 1×1 porcelain mosaic is actually glass…made, of course, from Cathode Ray Tubes. How cool is that? You could be watching a movie on your tube today and walking on it next year!
